My name uses alternating \u201cah<\/strong>\u201cs and \u201cee<\/strong>\u201cs to make \u201cAH-dree-YAHN Ee-VAH-kheev<\/strong>\u201c, where the \u201cah<\/strong>\u201cs are halfway between a long \u201caaaww\u201d and a short \u201ca\u201d; the \u201cdree<\/strong>\u201d includes a rolled \u201cR\u201d \u2014 which any English speaker can say: just say \u201cditty<\/strong>\u201d really quickly, minimizing the first syllable to almost nothing; and the \u201ckh<\/strong>\u201d is a softer version of the sound you make while gargling (as in the Scottish \u201cloch\u201d).

The result sounds like this:
\u201cAH-ditty-AHN-ee-VAH-(kh)eev<\/strong>\u201c

When saying my first name in Ukrainian, some accent the first syllable (\u201cAHD-ree-yan\u201d), while others accent the third (\u201cad-ree-YAHN\u201d). Either is fine. And for the record, my full given name is Adrian Jurij (or Iurii) Mykhailo Ivakhiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if it\u2019s easier for you, \u201cAy-dree-yen\u201d (or \u201cEh-dree-yen\u201d for Canadians), as in the movie \u201cRocky,\u201d is fine, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the general rule, then<\/strong>: If you have any difficulty rolling your R’s, please use (Rocky’s) “Adrian” as it would normally sound in English. If you are a native or learned R-roller, then the original pronunciation (as described above) is best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
