The research found that extreme precipitation across the Northeast, due to climate change, will rise an estimated 52 percent annually, worst case scenario.<\/p>\n<p>Deborah Neher is a co-author for recently published research entitled, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1999-4907\/14\/6\/1205\">Heavy Logging Machinery Impacts Soil Physical Properties More than Nematode Communities<\/a>. Mechanized logging equipment causes considerable soil disturbance, but little information is available regarding thresholds for impacts on soil nematodes, critical members of soil food webs which perform important ecological functions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/agricultural-sciences\/story\/fact-sheets-provide-new-insights-agritourism-and-direct-sales-us-states\/\">Fact sheets provide new insights into agritourism and direct sales for US states<\/a> &#8211; Lisa Chase was quoted in a Penn State article about a new set of fact sheets that provides comprehensive insights into the demographics of U.S. farms that offer agritourism activities or sell food directly to consumers or both.<\/p>\n<p>UVM Extension&#8217;s Joshua Faulkner was quoted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevendaysvt.com\/vermont\/lake-advocates-say-vermont-has-botched-regulating-pollution-on-dairy-farms\/Content?oid=38342070\">Seven Days<\/a> article about Lake Champlain water quality advocates stating that the State of Vermont has botched regulating pollution from dairy farms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cfgrower.com\/various-ventilation-options-for-tunnel-growers\/\">Country Folks Grower<\/a> wrote about a webinar with UVM Extension&#8217;s Chris Callahan and Becky Maden discussing high tunnel ventilation during a Vermont Vegetable &amp; Berry Growers Association. Callahan is an agriculture engineer and Maden is a vegetable nutrient management specialist.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Isselhardt described the 2023 sugaring season as &#8220;microclimate-dependent,&#8221; and discussed other factors in an article for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vnews.com\/Though-maple-syrup-production-dipped-this-year-experts-and-producers-aren-t-worried-51345974\">Valley News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vermontpublic.org\/show\/vermont-edition\/2023-06-16\/reflecting-on-the-2023-sugaring-season-with-a-maple-expert-from-uvm-extension\">Vermont Public<\/a> interviewed Mark Isselhardt about the sugaring season in 2023 compared to most years.<\/p>\n<p>The UVM Institute for Agroecology is featured in an editorial published in the international journal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/21683565.2023.2216495\">Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CDAE Chair and Director of the Center for Rural Studies Jane Kolodinsky was interviewed for two stories:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 20px\">\n<li>The impact of the closing of big box stores on communities with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/2023\/05\/11\/bankruptcy-national-chains-leave-empty-holes-chittenden-county\/\">WCAX<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The ability of communities to recover from the closing of anchor institutions, such as colleges and universities with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2023\/06\/01\/as-enrollments-dwindle-and-colleges-close-towns-hope-developers-will-revive-abandoned-campuses\/\">NPR Marketplace<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An article by Ann Hazelrigg in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutlandherald.com\/features\/weekend_magazine\/uvm-extension-frost-damage\/article_0a3f4f93-37a3-5323-9e02-88bead3da200.html\">Rutland Herald<\/a> assessed the May frost damage to gardens and ornamental plantings.<\/p>\n<p>Ann Hazelrigg wrote about cedar apple rust in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesargus.com\/features\/weekend_magazine\/uvm-extension-cedar-apple-rust-disease\/article_1f97db40-a387-5faa-9376-270945bac5fd.html\">Times Argus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UVM Master Gardener Deborah Benoit describes the differences between annuals, biennials and perennials in an article for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutlandherald.com\/features\/weekend_magazine\/uvm-extension-annuals-vs-perennials\/article_7f84b12d-6f17-583e-a15a-e708c8a128cb.html\">Rutland Herald.<\/a><br \/>\n&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samessenger.com\/things_to_do\/learn-about-the-differences-between-annual-and-perennial-plants-from-a-uvm-extension-master-gardener\/article_0eb61f08-ff2a-11ed-a185-8b960c94ea7d.html\">Also in the St. Albans Messenger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UVM Master Gardener Bonnie Kirn Donahue wrote an article for <a href=\"https:\/\/bartonchronicle.com\/lawns-for-bees\/\">The Chronicle<\/a> about a simple way to increase pollinator habitat in your yard by not mowing the grass.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/shelburnefarms.org\/about\/news-and-stories\/enriching-lives-animal-and-human\">Shelburne Farms newsletter<\/a> featured a story by Catherine Zac, an Animal Sciences senior who is an intern at the farm this summer.
