UVM CDAE Professor Asim Zia was a presenter during this session.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>September is Hunger Action Month, a reminder that Vermonters are still struggling with food insecurity post-flooding, and demand is up after the storms this summer. UVM Clinical Associate Professor Farryl Bertmann was quoted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/2023\/09\/05\/vermont-food-pantries-see-increased-demand-following-summer-floods\/\">WCAX<\/a> article about her research with food insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Pumpkins are in peril this year after a wet summer of floods and very wet fields. UVM Extensions Heather Darby stated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burlingtonfreepress.com\/story\/life\/2023\/09\/14\/vermont-farmers-face-pumpkin-catastrophe-from-wet-fields\/70844026007\/\">Burlington Free Press<\/a> article that the risk of diseases and crop failures is quite high from the wet weather.<\/p>\n<p>UVM Extension Assistant Professor Alexandra Kosiba was quoted for an article on how extreme weather impacts fall foliage, for an article in <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2023-09-qa-extreme-weather-impacts-fall.html\">PHYS ORG<\/a>, originally authored by Gund Institute&#8217;s Basil Waugh.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 20px\">\n<li>Also on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynbc5.com\/article\/fall-foliage-vermont-rainfall-forecast\/45270526\">WPTZ<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Entomologist Bryony Sands was quoted in an article on <a href=\"https:\/\/atmos.earth\/dung-beetle-the-cradle-of-diversity\/\">Atmos<\/a> about dung beetles and how they decompose animal manure as an ecosystem service.<\/p>\n<p>Plant and Soil Science Associate Professor Terry Bradshaw was quoted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vermontpublic.org\/local-news\/2023-09-07\/vermont-apple-growers-facing-crop-loss-from-freeze-still-want-visitors-this-fall\">Vermont Public<\/a> article about the May 2023 frost and resulting damage to apple orchards in Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>A fact sheet prepared by UVM Extension&#8217;s Heather Darby was referenced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burlingtonfreepress.com\/story\/life\/2023\/09\/21\/the-impact-of-the-summer-rain-on-sam-mazzas-corn-maze-in-colchester\/70911043007\/\">Burlington Free Press<\/a> article about the impacts of summer rain on Sam Mazza&#8217;s corn maze.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/news\/ovpr\/uvm-launches-six-innovative-flood-research-projects\">UVM news<\/a> article reported that six innovative flood research projects have been funded. UVM Extension&#8217;s Christopher Callahan and Vernon Grubinger, and CDAE&#8217;s Kelly Hamshaw and Daniel Baker received rapid flood research grant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningagclips.com\/financial-guidance-available-to-vermont-agribusinesses\/\">Morning Ag Clips<\/a> announced that the UVM Extension Farm Viability and Forest Business programs are currently accepting registrations from Vermont farm, forest and maple businesses for both short and longer-term business planning services.<\/p>\n<p>Nutrition and Food Sciences Assistant Professor Trishnee Bhurosy was quoted in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakdaleleader.com\/news\/four-california-cities-top-20-vegans-vegetarians\/\">Oakdale Leader<\/a> article about tips for people who want to have a vegan\/vegetarian lifestyle on a budget.<\/p>\n<p>UVM Extension Professor Lisa Chase discussed economic and social trends for fall foliage tourism in 2023 for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/news\/gund\/how-extreme-weather-impacts-fall-foliage\">Gund Institute<\/a> press release.<\/p>\n<p>An article in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miltonindependent.com\/news\/chittenden-county-4-hers-compete-in-champlain-valley-fair\/article_9335a74e-4e7b-11ee-9668-27795a0d8d5c.html\">Milton Independent<\/a> highlighted Chittenden County 4-H club members who competed and showed during events at the Champlain Valley Fair in August, 2023. Many of the 4-H events, including the judging jamboree and poultry show, took place on 4-H Day, Aug. 27.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morningagclips.com\/vermont-4-hers-victorious-at-regional-4-h-dairy-show\/\">Morning Ag Clips<\/a> reported on Vermont 4-Hers who were victorious after a New England regional 4-H dairy show at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, MA during September.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vermontpublic.org\/show\/all-things-gardening\/2023-09-10\/learn-to-identify-invasive-jumping-worms-and-remove-them-from-your-garden-soil\">Vermont Public&#8217;s<\/a> All Things Gardening discussed the invasive jumping worm, and PSS Josef Gorres provided research, data and identification tips for getting rid of this invasive species.<\/p>\n<p>PSS Ann Hazelrigg wrote an article in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtcng.com\/special_publications\/home\/sawflies-live-up-to-name-chewing-through-foliage\/article_28150bbe-4db6-11ee-8797-236cf406e480.html\">Vermont Community Newspaper Group<\/a> about sawfly larvae and their destructive feeding habits that skeletonize the leaves of trees and shrubs.<\/p>\n<p>Extension Associate Professor Ann Hazelrigg wrote about early tree defoliation in apple and crabapple trees, and why it happens in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutlandherald.com\/features\/weekend_magazine\/uvm-extension-early-tree-defoliation\/article_cd3751f1-ddee-506b-9ed8-43fa12abac98.html\">Rutland Herald<\/a> article.<\/p>\n<p>UVM Master Gardener Bonnie Kirn Donahue wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtcng.com\/special_publications\/home\/attract-pollinators-to-your-garden-with-these-great-native-shrubs\/article_8bf3152e-3d3d-11ee-8710-2fc8fce183c0.html\">VCNG<\/a> about how to attract pollinators to gardens with native shrubs.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutlandherald.com\/features\/weekend_magazine\/uvm-extension-protect-tree-roots\/article_900fbecb-105b-57de-8864-21c6924509f1.html\">Rutland Herald<\/a> featured an article from UVM Extension on the benefits of protecting tree roots from compaction, mower damage, too much mulch, and other detrimental practices.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesargus.com\/features\/weekend_magazine\/uvm-extension-dorm-room-houseplants\/article_918d7140-07c0-5a19-9c50-f0b479f6dfb0.html\">Times Argus<\/a> featured an article from UVM Extension on Dorm Room Houseplants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joshua Faulkner was quoted in a Popular Resistance article about severe storm events and their increasing frequency in the Northeast.
