UVM Extension Maple Specialist Mark Isselhardt was interviewed for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vermontpublic.org\/local-news\/2024-02-09\/some-maple-producers-are-collecting-sap-during-this-warm-spell-but-its-not-a-guarantee\">Vermont Public<\/a> about collecting sap during these early warm spells and what it means for the industry&#8217;s sustainability.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 20px\">\n<li>Also in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samessenger.com\/news\/uvm-expert-how-is-climate-change-impacting-the-maple-syrup-industry\/article_0529e3a4-ca93-11ee-9561-c313760f6896.html\">Saint Albans Messenger.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>UVM Extension Director Roy Beckford, who is also co-chair of the Vermont Agriculture Recovery Task Force, was interviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/2024\/02\/09\/new-report-details-financial-impacts-flooding-vermont-farmers\/\">WCAX<\/a> about findings from their Extreme Weather Impact &amp; Recovery Report.<\/p>\n<p>UVM Center for Sustainable Agriculture research was referenced in an <a href=\"https:\/\/agupdate.com\/agriview\/news\/livestock\/sheep-produce-eco-friendly-solutions\/article_7735bba0-bad3-11ee-a958-77d82890be45.html\">AgUpdate\/Agri-View<\/a> article about sheep producing eco-friendly solutions. The Center&#8217;s research demonstrated promising results for wool-pellet efficacy as a fertilizer.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the University of Vermont Extension are conducting experiments to investigate how effective coated seeds are in comparison to non-coated seeds. Heather Darby, a professor leading the research, told lawmakers that coated seeds became ubiquitous for corn and soybeans in Vermont in the mid-2000s, though their use has been on the rise since the 1990s. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capeandislands.org\/2024-02-02\/vermont-house-lawmakers-introduce-bill-to-ban-neonicotinoid-coated-seeds\">CAI, Atlantic Public Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UVM faculty and staff are quoted in this <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2024\/02\/01\/vermont-lawmakers-consider-banning-pesticide-class-to-help-insect-pollinators\/\">VTDigger<\/a> article about bee exposure to neonicotinoid pesticides and banning them.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Alger, director of the UVM Bee Lab, was quoted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vnews.com\/Vermont-lawmakers-consider-banning-pesticide-class-to-help-insect-pollinators-53912573\">Valley News<\/a> article about a movement to ban neonicotinoid pesticides in Vermont that threatened bee populations.<\/p>\n<p>Community Development and Applied Economics Assistant Professor Kate Mays co-authored a study that was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2504-4990\/6\/1\/17\">MDPI journal<\/a> entitled, More Capable, Less Benevolent: Trust Perceptions of AI Systems across Societal Contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Kris Stepanuck, UVM Extension Program Leader for the Lake Champlain Sea Grant, was interviewed for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynbc5.com\/article\/dollar6-million-in-federal-funds-to-go-towards-lake-champlain-basin-and-flood-resilience\/46772286\">NBC5<\/a> article about $6 million in federal funds that are going toward the Lake Champlain basin and flood resilience.<\/p>\n<p>UVM Extension Urban Forestry&#8217;s Ginger Nickerson recommends in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesargus.com\/features\/weekend_magazine\/uvm-extension-check-trees-for-alb-signs\/article_9be962f3-6c9a-50b7-b648-048a2504ac5b.html\">Times Argus<\/a> about checking hardwood trees, especially maples, for the invasive and destructive Asian longhorn beetles, even though these insects have not spread to Vermont yet.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 20px\">\n<li>Also in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.willistonobserver.com\/living\/living_green\/be-on-the-lookout-for-maple-loving-invasive-beetle\/article_6fc5da9c-c08e-11ee-b4d4-5b239574ef99.html\">Williston Observer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>UVM Extension&#8217;s Vern Grubinger wrote an article for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutlandherald.com\/opinion\/commentary\/grubinger-census-shows-vermont-ag-changes\/article_97311b87-5b1c-572b-8ec2-50d071e280c4.html\">Rutland Herald<\/a> about the results of the 2022 Vermont agricultural census that includes data on the products, land and people that comprise the farm communities in the state.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 20px\">\n<li>Also in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mountaintimes.info\/census-captures-changes-in-vermont-agriculture\/\">Mountain Times.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/2024\/02\/20\/uvms-cheese-dairy-fest-gives-students-sampling-green-mountains-finest\/\">WCAX<\/a> reported on UVM&#8217;s Cheese and Dairy Fest that was held on Tuesday, February 20 in the Davis Center.<\/p>\n<p>The Vermont Grain Growers Conference, co-hosted by UVM Extension Northwest Crops and Soils program, will be held on March 20, 2024.
