See current rates&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/studentfinancialservices\/summer_university_tuition_and_fees\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2: Adjust the number of credits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enroll in 1 credit per 40 hours you plan to work at your internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3: Complete the required forms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/go.uvm.edu\/interninfo\">College of Arts &amp; Sciences Internship Credit Information Form<\/a>. <em>Please direct any questions to&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"mailto:kbureau@uvm.edu\">Kelly Bureau<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is your internship under\/unpaid (summers only)?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, apply for <a href=\"https:\/\/site.uvm.edu\/cas-experiential-learning\/?page_id=77\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"77\">CAS summer internship funding<\/a>!<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I qualify for Internship Credit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In order to qualify for credit, you must be working with a company or organization that is able to sign our&nbsp;UVM Internship MOU&nbsp;(i.e. legal entities or sole proprietorships with proper insurance coverage).<\/strong> Please have your internship supervisor contact cas.discovery@uvm.edu for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Internships that qualify for credit are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One-time experiences generally lasting 1-10 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distinguished from a job, student club participation, or volunteer work by a &#8220;learning agenda&#8221; that structures the experience and allows the student to get a real sense of the larger structure and impact of the organization on the community, clients, or other stakeholders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focused around completing a discrete project or set of tasks that furthers the work of the organization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supervised on-site by a dedicated mentor who is employed by the organization offering the internship and who will ensure the student completes their &#8220;learning agenda,&#8221; body of work, and that the student is supported throughout the experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not interchangeable with positions that the company or organization would normally hire a part-time worker for (i.e. a cashier, front desk, or administrative position with no additional learning opportunities or observations of higher-level work or positions in which non-students are also hired and paid for).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paid (either by the organization, via UVM internship scholarship, or via external scholarship or stipend) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unpaid*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remote, In-Person, or Hybrid (some remote and some in-person work)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>*If your internship employer does not offer to pay you, you might ask them about other forms of compensation. Some internships offer stipends, which is a fixed amount of money delivered in a lump sum, used to cover expenses (e.g. a $1,000 stipend for the semester). Other allotments may include housing, food, or vouchers for gym memberships, bus passes, etc. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you have questions about whether your internship will be eligible for credit through UVM, please see our <a href=\"http:\/\/site.uvm.edu\/cas-experiential-learning\/files\/2025\/11\/CAS-Internship-Policy-2025_11.20.25.pdf\">full policy<\/a> or reach out to&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:cas.internships@uvm.edu\">cas.discovery@uvm.edu<\/a>&nbsp;to talk with our Internship Team!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Internships vs. Research Positions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be tricky to tell the difference between Internship and Research positions, especially if the position title is ambiguous!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Research positions<\/strong>&nbsp;allow students to participate in the planning, conducting and\/or reporting of a research project that leads to the creation of original knowledge in the discipline. The primary focus of research positions is on making an original intellectual or creative contribution and they are often supervised by faculty members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Internships&nbsp;<\/strong>are undertaken with the purpose of furthering career-related skills at an organization or company whose primary mission is commercial or nonprofit in nature and which has clients, stakeholders, or other beneficiaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are undertaking a research position, contact your department to find out how to earn credit for your work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Credit for completed internships &amp; other work experiences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While it is not possible to earn internship credit for internships that have already been completed, it is possible to earn 1 academic credit as you reflect upon your experience and prepare further for your future! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CAS 1990: &#8220;Professional Contexts&#8221;<\/strong> consists of reflective work stemming from completed professional, community, and work-based experiences of various kinds. You&#8217;ll reflect meaningfully on the value and integrity of your work outside the classroom and be able to understand and articulate the relationship between tasks during employment or volunteer work and your overall liberal arts education and career development. The course will also help you effectively position yourself for success during the remainder of your undergraduate study and for your future career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note:<\/strong> This course only runs during the Fall semester each year<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prerequisite<\/strong>: students must have undertaken at least one experience (80+ hours) upon which they will base their reflective work in this course, such as a part time job, volunteer work, student employment, work-study, club leadership, or an internship (if no previous credit has been awarded for it). <em>(Note: Students who have <\/em>only <em>earned SINT credit for a summer internship still qualify for this course). <\/em>Your qualifying experience must have occurred during your time as an enrolled undergraduate student at UVM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact instructor Sophia Trigg (<a href=\"mailto:strigg@uvm.edu\">strigg@uvm.edu<\/a>) to get your qualifying work approved and to get an override.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is CAS 2991?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CAS 2991 is an elective internship course that you complete in conjunction with an internship experience. Individual departments determine whether internships count toward the major and minor. Students are expected to either enroll in an internship course or work independently with a faculty member to design a readings and research project that complements the internship activity.
