OIE approval is granted following a health and safety review of the destination, activities, and other key travel factors<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Email <a href=\"mailto:travel.study@uvm.edu\">travel.study@uvm.edu<\/a> to let them know you need to be set up in GoAbroad to begin this process. <\/strong><\/em>Please CC us on the email (cas.discovery@uvm.edu), so that we know you have initiated this process.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-atomic-blocks-ab-accordion ab-block-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"ab-accordion-title\">Award Amounts<\/summary><div class=\"ab-accordion-text\">\n<p>For those working 360+ hours over the 12-week summer session, the maximum award amount is $4,500. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All awards are pro-rated up to that amount <strong>based on the number of hours worked and are capped by the financial need expressed in your application<\/strong> (i.e., the sum of your summer expenses for housing, grocery, and transport to\/from your internship).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For students working fewer hours, and who therefore qualify for less funding from CAS, we recommend augmenting your scholarship with a paid part-time job. The form is branched to ensure you are getting to the correct questions for the funds you are eligible for. If you believe there is a mistake or issue with the form, please contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:cas.discovery@uvm.edu?subject=Summer%20Scholarship%20Application%20Form\">cas.discovery@uvm.edu<\/a>&nbsp;for assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-atomic-blocks-ab-accordion ab-block-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"ab-accordion-title\">Eligibility Criteria<\/summary><div class=\"ab-accordion-text\">\n<p>This program is open to all undergraduate, degree-seeking students in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences who will be returning to UVM in the Fall semester (i.e. no graduating seniors) to continue their undergraduate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to apply you must &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have<em> been offered<\/em>&nbsp;a summer&nbsp;unpaid* internship**<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have adequate knowledge of the internship in order to fully and thoughtfully complete the application questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be planning to work more than 80 hours at your internship site between the first and last days of UVM&#8217;s summer semester.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Unpaid means that you will be receiving less than $500 total in compensation for hours or work completed at your internship site\/host organization. You will be responsible for relaying this to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internship length and approximate number of hours per week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay rate\/total pay provided&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UVM Internship MOU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Thank You note for our donors<\/summary>\n<p>Students selected for funding will be required to write a Thank You note to the donors providing our funds. This note should include the following information:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your name, major, year, and any other info you wish to share about yourself<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How this internship will help you fulfil your future goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What you hope to learn from the internship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A photo of you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Thank You note should be&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8230;at least 300 words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;in the format of a letter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;addressed to &#8220;Dear donor,&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Send any questions to&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:cas.discovery@uvm.edu\">cas.discovery@uvm.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Enroll in Credit<\/summary>\n<p>If selected for funding via CAS, you MUST be enrolled in internship credit during the summer term. You have two options to fulfil this requirement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SINT 2991 &#8211; About this course:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coursework for this online asynchronous class will include hours tracking, 2-3 small assignments, and a final reflection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$100 will be added to your total award amount to cover tuition for this course<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>This course DOES NOT count for credit toward your degree. <\/strong>(On your degree audit, you will see SINT 2991 appear in the &#8220;not counted&#8221; section).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will automatically receive an override for the course from Kelly Bureau after you are notified of your funding. Any questions or issues with registration should be sent to&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:cas.discovery@uvm.edu\">cas.discovery@uvm.edu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CAS 2991 A &#8211; About this course:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coursework for this online asynchronous class will include hours tracking, 5-6 professional development assignments, weekly reflections\/blog posts, and a final reflection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will be responsible for paying tuition for this course at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/studentfinancialservices\/summer_university_tuition_and_fees\">UVM Summer Tuition<\/a>&nbsp;rate.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can earn anywhere from 1-12 internship credits via this course depending on the number of hours you work at your internship (1 credit = 40 hours). Keep in mind that summer tuition is paid per credit and that CAS students are allowed to count a maximum of 12 internship credits toward their degree.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No override is needed. This will allow UVM to deposit your award money directly in your bank account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You may already be enrolled in direct deposit through&nbsp;PeopleSoft for an on-campus job, but this is a different system, so please do check to make sure you are signed up in&nbsp;myUVM!\u202f<\/em><\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>OIE Approval (for International Internships)<\/summary>\n<p>If you&#8217;re planning an internship that takes place outside of the United States<em> <\/em>or in a US territory, you needed to have had this approved by OIE prior to applying for our funding. OIE approval is granted following a health and safety review of the destination, activities, and other key travel factors. If, for some reason, you did not complete that step but were awarded funding, funds will be withheld until we have confirmation from OIE that your travel has been approved. By centralizing promotion, application collection, and funding disbursement, administrative pressure on departments was reduced and more students have been able to take advantage of available funds.\u00a0Over the past 11 years, 423 students have been awarded through this program!<\/p><\/div><ul class=\"ab-social-links\"><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"faq-summer-scholarships\">Frequently Asked Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>How many students will be funded?<\/summary>\n<p>Over the past few years, CAS received an average of 150 applications and awarded ~60 students&#8211;a ~40% award rate. Because award amounts are variable, we are not able to predict how many awards will be given this year, but all students are encouraged to apply, just in case! The waitlist does tend to move quickly as students&#8217; plans change.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>What if I have been offered a position at more than one internship?<\/summary>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve landed multiple internships, congratulations! However, this is where tough decisions need to be made. Some things to consider: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you&#8217;ve received an offer for more than one unpaid internship, please keep in mind that <strong>you can only apply for this funding once<\/strong> <strong>per year<\/strong>&#8211;for a single unpaid summer internship. You will need to decide which internship you would like to pursue and apply with that site&#8217;s information. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A word on juggling offers&#8211;be thoughtful. It&#8217;s not fair to internship sites (and to other students who may have applied for the internship) to string them along if you are ultimately planning to decline their offer. Be aware of your professional reputation and ensure you are communicating clearly and often with those who are extending opportunities to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You will not receive a funding decision prior to May 2nd<\/strong>. Please be sure to communicate with your supervisor(s) about this and about the fact that you have more than one internship offer. If you find yourself in a situation where your internship site requires an answer from you and you need this funding in order to accept the position&#8211;please email <a href=\"mailto:cas.discovery@uvm.edu\">cas.discovery@uvm.edu<\/a> to request early consideration. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you receive an offer for both an unpaid internship and for a paid internship, please be sure to communicate with your supervisor(s) about the fact that you have more than one offer and that you are waiting on a funding decision before committing. Your supervisor(s) may or may not be willing to extend your decision deadline, but they also might not.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Need advice? This most commonly occurs if students land a paid internship, if their internship plans fall through, or if they receive funding from another source.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>What if I still have financial need but I am being paid by my internship site?<\/summary>\n<p>If your cost of living is higher than your internship is able to accommodate, we recommend talking to your supervisor about either adjusting the numbers of hours you&#8217;re working so that you can pursue a part-time job simultaneously, or for other assistance (covering your lunches, gas, or other small expenses). The Career Center may be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/career\/job-search-resources\">helpful resource in searching for part-time work<\/a> and for speaking with your supervisor about your pay.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>What if I&#8217;m not awarded funding?<\/summary>\n<p>We sincerely wish that we could fund 100% of applicants, but because our funds are finite, we are often in the position of making difficult decisions. We consider all applications against on our primary impact philosophy (see <a href=\"#award-philosophy\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"77\">awarding philosophy<\/a> above), but also include factors such as quality of application materials, financial need, and safety risk. It is also possible that you or your internship did not meet the eligibility criteria for these awards, which would have been explained to you via email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like support in finding a summer job or in finding other possible sources of funding, we recommend that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/career\/internship-scholarships\">contact the Career Center<\/a>.
