The decision to avoid focusing on the many benefits of the Field to the city in terms of climate regulation and ecological services allowed me to focus more on the original research question\u2019s inquiry into Berliners\u2019 personal meaning and connection to the space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than enumerating the ecosystem services of the Field, environmental values center around what environmental characteristics and services of the space contribute to how people felt using the space and what it meant to them more broadly. This centered particularly around the scale, the unique openness, and certain ecosystem services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the primary notes of both interviewees and other sources in relation to the character of the field was its contrast to surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>On entering the area, the first thing you get is an impressive feeling of size, space and openness. This is the first impression that shapes the perceived image and sticks in the mind. Everyone has enough space to find their niche.<sup data-fn=\"334c4974-493d-4a28-bba4-acd9d54f9a5c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#334c4974-493d-4a28-bba4-acd9d54f9a5c\" id=\"334c4974-493d-4a28-bba4-acd9d54f9a5c-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> What became most apparent was the interplay between environmental characteristics of the site and usages\/users. As noted before, Kristin Hensel remarked on the interdependent relationship of the space and the mindset of recreators. It\u2019s very special, she said, both \u201cbecause of the vastness, then also because it\u2019s an unused area..so it\u2019s just open space that can be designed\u201d.<sup data-fn=\"87d9ee1b-9f00-4c12-b025-e6a8c865528d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#87d9ee1b-9f00-4c12-b025-e6a8c865528d\" id=\"87d9ee1b-9f00-4c12-b025-e6a8c865528d-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> The openness allows for freedom to build an alternative use area, and \u201cif there was no Tempelhofer Feld, there would also be no Allmende, no community garden like the Allmende-Kontor\u201d.<sup data-fn=\"01605c73-ed02-4344-9d9d-35e8a034c974\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#01605c73-ed02-4344-9d9d-35e8a034c974\" id=\"01605c73-ed02-4344-9d9d-35e8a034c974-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s not a one way street, \u201cwe&#8217;ve also shaped the field, because we&#8217;re very present there and offer a lot of green and a lot of shade and recreation on this fallow land without trees\u201d, says Kristen.<sup data-fn=\"6e7170da-b7ca-48ac-8889-ca4a322c3a6d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#6e7170da-b7ca-48ac-8889-ca4a322c3a6d\" id=\"6e7170da-b7ca-48ac-8889-ca4a322c3a6d-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> Allmende-Kontor (AK) has shaped the field as the field has shaped them, so \u201cmany people don&#8217;t just associate the field with the garden, also sort of the garden users,\u201d Kristin says.<sup data-fn=\"df650b64-b975-46f4-b646-7ff59c6850f0\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#df650b64-b975-46f4-b646-7ff59c6850f0\" id=\"df650b64-b975-46f4-b646-7ff59c6850f0-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, an interdependence of the environment and activity creates a bond between the physical space and the community of people using it\u2014both longstanding users and single-day visitors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning to the idea of environmental uniqueness, \u201cno greater contrast is conceivable than coming from Berlin to Tempelhofer Feld,\u201d said Friedrich Naumann in 1897; \u201cnowhere else in Germany is there a similar sight. The women and children wander out of the stone streets and lie down on the steppe\u2026.There are thousands of them sitting on the ground between Rixdorf and Sch\u00f6neberg on beautiful days\u201d.<sup data-fn=\"3efce553-13ea-4ea6-a3cb-973eb0d99b50\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#3efce553-13ea-4ea6-a3cb-973eb0d99b50\" id=\"3efce553-13ea-4ea6-a3cb-973eb0d99b50-link\">7<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>Nowhere else in Germany is there a similar sight.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p><cite>Friedrich naumann, 1897<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one aspect of the field that Juan adamantly shared gratitude for. In Berlin it\u2019s, \u201calways buildings, buildings, and then suddenly you are in this open space\u201d.<sup data-fn=\"02b4ca4b-efde-4a47-a14e-f15b11295e2c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#02b4ca4b-efde-4a47-a14e-f15b11295e2c\" id=\"02b4ca4b-efde-4a47-a14e-f15b11295e2c-link\">8<\/a><\/sup> The vastness of the space and the open terrain is key to enabling such diverse uses, both ecological services and social uses. Berlin is encircled by rural Brandenburg, occupied by much agricultural use and less developed landscape. Its natural offerings are often seen as an escape from the city, much like Tempelhof Field, which people expressed valuing. Kristin specifically appreciated the possibility to connect with the characteristics of more rural natural spaces in the center of Berlin, making it \u201cpossible to have the feeling of country, nature, and freedom in the middle of the city\u201d.<sup data-fn=\"16330d08-aef5-4a40-88af-c42d25fac596\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#16330d08-aef5-4a40-88af-c42d25fac596\" id=\"16330d08-aef5-4a40-88af-c42d25fac596-link\">9<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inner meadow ring, the innermost grassy sections cross divided by tarmac lanes and the outer grassy areas, serve diverse purposes of nature conservation.
