This is a valuable aspect to the field that emerges as a reason for its further protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voids exist as reflections of their comprehension by people within a city and their potential for transformation.<sup data-fn=\"dd8cd0cb-f311-4cca-a11c-cadd4456a6f2\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#dd8cd0cb-f311-4cca-a11c-cadd4456a6f2\" id=\"dd8cd0cb-f311-4cca-a11c-cadd4456a6f2-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> And while many competing visions for the field exist in a larger context of envisioning Berlin\u2019s future, the Tempelhof Field has become a place where people can project personal wishes and imaginations onto, because no single vision has been fully developed or carried out.<sup data-fn=\"745e0300-a114-4d54-a6b1-fcc641d0a685\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#745e0300-a114-4d54-a6b1-fcc641d0a685\" id=\"745e0300-a114-4d54-a6b1-fcc641d0a685-link\">2<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research enumerates this quality perfectly, stating \u201cits frequent use and the experiences associated with it, as well as the opportunity to live out one&#8217;s own culture or lifestyle and the activities central to it here &#8211; and possibly only here &#8211; can also give rise to feelings of identification, of one&#8217;s own location or \u201chome\u201d in the district and the city. Such identification is further supported by participation in the design of the place.&#8221;<sup data-fn=\"5a16e0c1-8138-49f8-a54c-6c1a6c3fc8ea\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#5a16e0c1-8138-49f8-a54c-6c1a6c3fc8ea\" id=\"5a16e0c1-8138-49f8-a54c-6c1a6c3fc8ea-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The field\u2019s unique characteristics make it suitable for this aforementioned experience, which is unique in Berlin. As we\u2019ve established, much is at play on the field and it is far from empty. Despite this, it has a relatively undefined character and has minimal signifiers (distinct signs that communicate specific meaning to users).<sup data-fn=\"19ea725b-1024-4db0-8024-8a840d312728\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#19ea725b-1024-4db0-8024-8a840d312728\" id=\"19ea725b-1024-4db0-8024-8a840d312728-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> Thus, individuals are able to engage in different experiences in their own ways, allowing them to take and give meaning to the site in unique and personal ways. Those who give meaning to the field are those who use it, not those responsible for its construction or control.<sup data-fn=\"f16f9116-0e13-4e21-9cd9-91d9c027db2d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#f16f9116-0e13-4e21-9cd9-91d9c027db2d\" id=\"f16f9116-0e13-4e21-9cd9-91d9c027db2d-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> Through independent usage, each new user or visitor gives the field a new meaning.<sup data-fn=\"2c009226-8d6b-4600-962d-e6f64e553931\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2c009226-8d6b-4600-962d-e6f64e553931\" id=\"2c009226-8d6b-4600-962d-e6f64e553931-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> Thus, what defines the field is those who use it, like Juan or Kristin, who find so many meanings in the space from the many ways they use it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is also visible in discourses of development and change urban on the field is that the uncertainty and irregularity of the space is a point of relative discomfort for administrative bodies in the city.<sup data-fn=\"5097ece6-6bd8-4ba7-a888-a63bd4d3529a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#5097ece6-6bd8-4ba7-a888-a63bd4d3529a\" id=\"5097ece6-6bd8-4ba7-a888-a63bd4d3529a-link\">7<\/a><\/sup> Attempts to control the field and place restraints on its uses through development and planning design are resisted by community initiatives. Allmende Kontor gardeners like Kristin pride themselves on the garden\u2019s crooked and chaotic aesthetic as a conscious choice in approaching how she and fellow gardeners imagine the city\u2014something with \u201cdiversity in the form of shape and unevenness\u201d.<sup data-fn=\"a48829c5-30a8-40cf-a18d-2f2b747b456c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a48829c5-30a8-40cf-a18d-2f2b747b456c\" id=\"a48829c5-30a8-40cf-a18d-2f2b747b456c-link\">8<\/a><\/sup> Activities of all sorts are examples of people engaging with the sire in ways that allow them to make their own meaning and project their values into public space. Tempelhof Field allows for this creativity and experimentation within its vastness.<sup data-fn=\"b7975040-e25f-4d31-883e-777edc230061\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b7975040-e25f-4d31-883e-777edc230061\" id=\"b7975040-e25f-4d31-883e-777edc230061-link\">9<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a space of such unique form and diversity where people can live out different experiences through its use, the identity forming component of the field comes into play. Through involvement in shaping the space\u2014which many do through civic initiatives like community gardening\u2014people generate feelings of identification and belonging.<sup data-fn=\"c979eb84-9aca-45be-9309-5c61fe5e23a2\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c979eb84-9aca-45be-9309-5c61fe5e23a2\" id=\"c979eb84-9aca-45be-9309-5c61fe5e23a2-link\">10<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even further, the participation process of field activities can give the field a high emotional value to users, which interviewees involved in civic initiatives expressed feeling about the space.<sup data-fn=\"92551799-36a3-44df-97de-b5331ce9e6da\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#92551799-36a3-44df-97de-b5331ce9e6da\" id=\"92551799-36a3-44df-97de-b5331ce9e6da-link\">11<\/a><\/sup> Juan sees the field as&nbsp; \u201cvery special\u201d and \u201cmagical\u201d, and considers it a \u201cvery, very important part of [his] life\u201d.<sup data-fn=\"39eab004-959d-4aee-a9be-5d8ac2ae75cb\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#39eab004-959d-4aee-a9be-5d8ac2ae75cb\" id=\"39eab004-959d-4aee-a9be-5d8ac2ae75cb-link\">12<\/a><\/sup> It is similar for Kristin, her initial gardening involvement \u201ccreated a very special bond in this huge field\u201d, and through \u201chelping to shape the city and the field,\u201d it has become very important to her.<sup data-fn=\"d4dcf549-7a17-43d8-8e7a-721c174f5f74\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d4dcf549-7a17-43d8-8e7a-721c174f5f74\" id=\"d4dcf549-7a17-43d8-8e7a-721c174f5f74-link\">13<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond personal meaning, voids are entangled with cities\u2019 larger conceptions of themselves, and because of its vastness, Tempelhof field has become a void representative of the city itself, lending to the creation of a city identity as a whole.<sup data-fn=\"8415b0d6-0807-40e0-9c8e-dff40fc92be1\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8415b0d6-0807-40e0-9c8e-dff40fc92be1\" id=\"8415b0d6-0807-40e0-9c8e-dff40fc92be1-link\">14<\/a><\/sup> Beginning with its protection, many consider the outcome of the 2014 referendum to be emblematic of Berlin\u2019s citizens\u2019 prioritization of public space over profit, a characteristic of its alternative culture.<sup data-fn=\"8e5fb7f0-a2fe-4b5e-92c3-12a0d9b1188b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8e5fb7f0-a2fe-4b5e-92c3-12a0d9b1188b\" id=\"8e5fb7f0-a2fe-4b5e-92c3-12a0d9b1188b-link\">15<\/a><\/sup> Beyond just protecting the field, users have bound the field to their conceptions of Berlin, using Tempelhof Field as more than a place to construct their own identity, but the identity of the city itself, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voids are an integral part of Berlin\u2019s landscape, with an unconventional park system developing from the voids spattering the city that have been appropriated for communal life in the decades since the war.<sup data-fn=\"8db372d6-b958-4286-8382-93e0efbee4c6\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8db372d6-b958-4286-8382-93e0efbee4c6\" id=\"8db372d6-b958-4286-8382-93e0efbee4c6-link\">16<\/a><\/sup> Their longstanding presence in the city has helped create the sense that Berlin is a city of opportunity and possibility.<sup data-fn=\"3cc40817-058f-49dc-897e-41df9db99119\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#3cc40817-058f-49dc-897e-41df9db99119\" id=\"3cc40817-058f-49dc-897e-41df9db99119-link\">17<\/a><\/sup> With the opening of Tempelhof Field and the ensuing creation of diverse and overlapping meanings from it, the void of Tempelhof Field has become an instrumental component in the city&#8217;s identity, and emblematic of it as a whole.
