The forces causing desertificatio<\/a>n<\/a> <\/a>a<\/a>re both natural (e.g., long-term changes in rainfall patterns that limit the growth of stabilizing vegetation) and human (e.g., overgrazing, deforestation, and other unsustainable agricultural practices).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Role of Climate Change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The climate has already been changing rapidly in Afric<\/a>a<\/a>,<\/a> <\/a>with projections for continued warming and shifts in precipitation patterns (Blunden and Arndt 2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As climate disruption continues, mass migration within Afric<\/a>a<\/a> <\/a>w<\/a>ill likely worsen food insecurit<\/a>y<\/a>,<\/a> <\/a>as nations which have sufficient food supplies for their populations will face pressures to provide food to those in need.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the <\/a>Great Green Wal<\/a>l<\/a> <\/a>w<\/a>as envisioned as an 8000 km long swath of trees crossing the entire continent to halt the movement of Saharan sands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
