The Garden District

Lafayette Square & Fish Fry
Lafayette Square is the second-oldest public park in New Orleans, Louisiana, located in the present-day Central Business District. During the late 18th century, this was part of a residential area called Faubourg Sainte Marie.
Bywater Town
The area now known as Bywater was mostly plantation land in the colonial era, with significant residential development beginning the first decade of the 19th century as part of what was known as “Faubourg Washington.”

Tyler Sonnichsen
Senior Lecturer, Department of Geography & Geosciences
Dr. Tyler Sonnichsen is a cultural geographer, historian, and musicologist whose research focuses on dynamics of intersections of place, culture, media, and memory.
His teaching experience has included a variety of introductory and upper-division courses on American Popular Culture, Environmental Justice, Geographic Research Methods, Gender, Urban Geography, Population Geography, Race & Ethnicity, and regional geographies of North America and Europe.
