VERTICAL LINES (Still Image Exercise #1)

I truly enjoyed the excitement that came along with discovering vertical lines in the public sphere as a result of this exercise. I began to notice that they not only can be found in infrastructure and among tools of daily living, but also in nature. These lines exist in places both high and low, and across the entirety of The University of Vermont’s campus.

I found the natural makeup of vertical lines found within the icicles along the Royall Tyler Theater to be fascinating. I appreciate the way their shadows reflect alongside the shadow of the tree branches.
I think this image is fascinating for a variety of reasons. Namely, the leading vertical line created by the colored tiles. As a Political Science/FTS double major, I appreciate the ways in which the leading line draws the eye to the activist messaging of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ banner.
These vertical lines provide a stark contrast to the more horizontal ones existing behind them, making for a visually appealing composition.
I began to look everywhere for vertical lines throughout the duration of this project, these vertical lines are accentuated by the fallen snow.
This image is so simple, taken on a walk home from class, yet meets the ‘line’ criteria in a variety of ways (the metal sign, the painted road, the trees, the lampposts, etc.)

Here I wanted to experiment with the coupling of depth of field (foreground/background) with vertical lines.
