Town Forest Recreation Planning Toolkit

The toolkit is the culminating product of a year-long Town Forest Recreational Planning Initiative in Vermont town forests. Theinitiative wasled by the Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program, a partnership between the University of Vermont Extension and Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation,with support from partners, including the Agency of Commerce, and Community Development, and University of Vermont Extension Vermont Tourism Research Center.

Working withSE Group, a consulting firm that specializes in community planning,the Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program engaged ten selected communities (see Town Forest Stories Pod for case studies)in a year-long town forest recreation planning process to develop action-based recreation plans. This toolkit is designed to guide you and your community replicate the planning process.

Vermont Trails and Greenways Manual

The Vermont Trails and Greenways Manual is for landowners, land trusts, conservation groups, and other interested parties, and covers how to create trails, from the planning stage to the maintaining stage. Also includes things like public outreach, getting funding, permits, construction, etc. Published 2005 and not updated.

Vermont Backcountry ski handbook

The Vermont Backcountry Ski handbook covers building and managing backcountry ski areas. It includes ecological considerations, building partnerships, implementation and construction, managing and monitoring, etc.

Grant Programs through the State of Vermont

Case Study: Mad River Valley Conservation and Recreation Visioning

Part of the Mad River Valley Recreation district. The MRVRD is a group helping to “facilitate, enhance, and create recreation opportunities” in the Mad River Valley. The Conservation and Recreation Visioning program is for organizations hoping to use their land for recreational spaces. They include a group of organizations dedication to outdoor recreation. They also have a grant program for groups hoping to develop recreational spaces. The program provides specifically for recreational projects.
