Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES)

The Agilent 5800 ICP-OES provides multi-element analysis using an inductively coupled plasma source to excite atoms and ions, producing element-specific emission lines.

The system enables rapid, simultaneous detection of multiple elements with high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range, making it suitable for trace and major element analysis across a variety of sample matrices.

Radial Viewing

  • Plasma viewed perpendicular to the central channel
  • Reduced matrix effects
  • Better for higher concentration (ppm) samples
  • Better for complex matrices (e.g. digested solids, environmental samples)

Axial Viewing

  • Plasma views along its central axis
  • Higher Sensitivity
  • Better for trace-level detection (low ppm range)
  • Clean or lightly matrixes samples

Chemical & Material Analysis

  • Metal composition: alloys, coatings
  • Catalyst analysis: metal loading (e.g. Pt, Pd, Au)
  • Leaching studies: tracing metal loss into solution

Environmental Analysis

  • Trace metals in water and soil
  • Heavy metal contamination studies
  • Nutrient analysis

Biological & Agricultural Analysis

  • Plant tissue analysis: nutrient uptake (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu)
  • Food analysis: mineral content and contamination
  • Biological samples: metals in digested tissues

Sample Prep

  • Liquid samples
    • Should not contain any particles or precipitates that will block the lines
    • Nitric acid is the best choice of acid matrix typically between 1% w/v and 3% w/v
    • The minimum sample is 5 mL, but the ideal final solution is 10mL in a 15 mL centrifuge tube.
  • Solid Samples
    • commonly require digestion (usually its a nitric acid digestion)
      • Our ICP-OES is not set up for HF digested samples
    • Avoid high concentrations of dissolved solids, will require dilutions
      • Total dissolved solids (TDS) must not exceed 0.1 wt% (0.1 g per 100 mL)
  • Concentration Guidelines
    • Range ppb to ppm levels
