Spring Workshops

Brightspace Bonanza!

The Center for Teaching & Learning’s May 15 – 26 “Brightspace Bonanza” workshops are now available for registration! Dates and times are listed below. CTL will also offer workshops regularly throughout the summer, and next academic year.

In categories of workshops below, you’ll see that there are, in most cases, two types: workshops that focus on how a specific tool or feature works and Migration Labs. While Migration Labs provide an overview of functionality, they are designed to help you interpret your migrated Blackboard course and how it works in Brightspace. Migration Labs point out the differences between Blackboard and Brightspace and provide guidance on to accomplish familiar tasks in UVM’s new learning management system.

If your fall Blackboard course has been migrated (copied) to Brightspace, you might wonder what to do next. Join us for an overview that describes what you can expect and will help you assess your course holistically, identify which of your migrated materials need attention, and what your next steps might be. (If you have detailed questions about specific tools in Brightspace, consider attending one of our Spotlight Labs.)

Brightspace Content & Course Organization

Content and Course Organization Workshop

In these sessions we’ll focus on how content can be added and organized in Brightspace to best support student learning. We’ll show the wide variety of content types that are supported, important settings, and powerful tools like Video Note and the Accessibility Checker.

To Register, click the links below.

Migration Lab: Spotlight on Content & Course Organization

How your content displays in your migrated Brightspace course depends on your Blackboard organizational choices. In this lab, we’ll show you strategies for handling some of the common organizational challenges. This session will be particularly helpful if your Blackboard course contained a multi-level folder structure, multiple Blackboard Items in folders, and had a complex Course Menu. Enrollment is limited so we can better your address specific questions.

Brightspace Assignments

Assignments Workshop

In this session we’ll focus on creating and previewing Assignments (individual and group), important settings, and connecting Assignments to Grades. We’ll cover editing and reordering Assignments, evaluating student submissions (including annotations and rubrics), and using the Submission Log for tracking student work.

Migration Lab: Spotlight on Assignments

These online workshops cover the details about how to check Assignments in your courses that were migrated from Blackboard. We will demonstrate where your Assignments are found throughout your course and options for getting them ready. Enrollment is limited so we can better address your specific questions.

Brightspace Quizzes and Tests

Quizzes Workshop

In Brightspace, the Quiz tool is used for both quizzes and tests. In this session we’ll show the workflow for creating quizzes, including creating questions, the question library, building a Quiz, and Grading Quizzes and viewing statistics and logs

Migration Lab: Spotlight on Quizzes

This workshop covers the details about how to check how your tests and quizzes migrated into your Brightspace course. We will demonstrate where and how to check your quizzes and question pools (if you used them in Blackboard) and discuss options for connecting them to Brightspace’s Grade Tool. Enrollment is limited so we can better address your specific questions.

Brightspace Grades

Grades Workshop
Recording of CTL
Grades workshop
45:12

This workshop covers how to set up and manage the Grade Book in your Brightspace course. We will demonstrate the best ways to organize the Grade Book and the best ways to enter grades. Some instructors may find it beneficial to create their Grades area anew rather than editing what has been migrated from Blackboard, and this session will help you decide which option is best for your course.

Brightspace Discussion

Discussions Workshop

This workshop covers the details of using the Discussion tool in Brightspace. We will demonstrate where to set up both whole class and group discussions, and how link them to your Table of Contents. We’ll look at how to clean up Discussions migrated from Blackboard and cover the differences between Forums and Topics in Brightspace.

Journal and Blog Assignments in Brightspace

Journal and Blog Assignments in Brightspace

Brightspace doesn’t have a journal or blog tool, so if you’re used to creating Blackboard assignments in those formats you’ll need to learn alternative ways to meet your instructional goals.  We will show how to clean up references to the old tools and set up the new options in both Brightspace and MS Teams.
