Writing in Sociology

Sociology is the study of the ways in which people and groups interact within society and the reasons for said interactions. Sociological writing contains many subcategories of form. All form in sociological writing, however, must contain clear structure in order to balance the complex nature of social interaction, pattern, theory, reason, and understanding.

Sociological writing contains cogent argument, compelling and well-researched evidence, and a consistent and clear unit of analysis when it comes to conducting and presenting research. Though instructor and class style may vary, and some sociology papers will require that the writer demonstrate their understanding of theory in the more limited, straight-forward reader response style of Explication de Texte, sociological writing must always be clear in purpose, method, and implication.
