This website features documents created by University of Vermont’s Undergraduate Writing Center tutors to share what they’ve learned about writing in their majors. As you take courses at UVM, you’ll discover that expectations for writing differ from department to department in the types of writing assigned, the kinds of evidence used to support an argument, conventions for formatting a paper, ways to cite sources, and the role/voice of the writer.
The tips presented here are not intended as substitutes for advice from your professors, who will often provide guidelines or rubrics that outline their expectations. They have not been reviewed and approved by departments. Rather, these tips were created and revised by many student tutors. You’ll find overviews of writing in the major, suggestions for how to go about writing, sample papers illustrating features of writing in the major, and links to other websites with helpful resources. We hope you will browse through the documents and find information that is useful to you.
