American Psychological Association (APA) Style
Nursing writing generally uses APA (American Psychological Association) formatting and citation conventions. APA in-text citations prioritize the information of author and date, which reflects the discipline-wide emphasis on who proposes theories or knowledge, as well as when they do so.
The authoritative guide to APA style and citation conventions is the physical handbook Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, which is available at Howe Library’s Reference Desk and in the Undergraduate Writing Center. The APA’s Style and Grammar Guidelines is not as comprehensive as the print version but will address most of the conventions that students will need to follow.
Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) also provides a useful APA Guide.
Dana Health Sciences Library
The Dana Health Sciences Library is an excellent resource for nursing students. Through their website, students can access numerous medical, nursing, and health sciences databases and access Health Sciences Research Guides. Students can also contact Dana Health Sciences librarians for research guidance and strategies.
UVM Undergraduate Writing Center
The Undergraduate Writing Center at UVM, located in the basement of the Howe Library, is an excellent resource to get peer-to-peer support on any writing project—whether it be for English, Nursing writing, or personal projects, like a resume or cover letter.
