Edward McMahon

Research Associate Professor, CDAE and Political Science

Edward McMahon currently holds a joint appointment as Research Associate Professor in the Departments of Community Development and Applied Economics, and Political Science, at the University of Vermont. His main area of interest is the development of democratic political institutions and the promotion of human rights in countries emerging from authoritarian rule. Dr. McMahon also regularly consults on democracy and human rights issues for a wide range of organizations. Dr. McMahon’s professional experience also includes serving as Senior Program Officer and Africa Regional Director with the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI). He spent 10 years as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State, specializing in African Affairs. Dr. McMahon received his B.S. from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Master’s degrees from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and Boston University, and a doctorate in Education Policy and Leadership Studies from the University of Vermont.
