Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF

Laurent Cartier holds a Doctorate and Master in Earth Sciences from Basel University and is a fellow of the Gemological Association of Great Britain. He has visited numerous gemstone-producing areas worldwide and has worked as a consultant and in teaching. His research explores sustainability and traceability issues in pearl farming and he collaborates with local stakeholders in designing mechanisms that promote responsible pearl farming. Pearl farming presents a fascinating case in which science catalysed the transformation of an extractive industry plagued by overexploitation into becoming a model for sustainable resource management. He is convinced that science can also greatly contribute to improving environmental sustainability in mineral resource extraction. Laurent has worked with IEDS on the Sustainable Pearls Project.
