Sustainable Livelihoods in Somaliland: Mainstreaming the Frankincense Trade

This video was filmed by IEDS doctoral scholar Anjanette Decarlo during her fieldwork in Somaliland in early 2011. IEDS Fellow Marta Ceroni also collaborated on this project. The goal of the video is to show how a postwar enclave within Somalia that has achieved functional autonomy is exploring means of sustainable development using a rare but renewable resource — frankincense tree resin that is used in fragrances and medicinal purposes. The Somali diaspora in the United States (particularly in Vermont) has been helping with the creation of supply chains and markets in this regard as well. See the report on Sustainable Sourcing of Phytochemicals as a Development Tool: The Case of Somaliland’s Frankincense Industry.
