Extension Professor Vern Grubinger and Extension Produce Safety Accreditation Program Coordinator Hans Estrin have been awarded $305,630 from the USDA’s Food Safety Outreach Program, for a three-year project that builds on the multi-state food safety education and outreach program called Community Accreditation for Produce Safety, or CAPS. The UVM Horticulture Research and Education Center (HREC) is a 97 acre property that was purchased by the University of Vermont (UVM) in the early 1950’s. Located in South Burlington, VT, it has been the primary field laboratory for College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) applied research and outreach in horticultural and agronomic crops. Six new research projects are being announced for the Vermont Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) at the University of Vermont (UVM). They join 29 projects already in progress. This work is funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), Hatch and Hatch Multistate Capacity Grants. UVM Department of Plant Biology Associate Professor Steve Keller was awarded a $497,476 grant, as part of a larger $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), for research into the effects of climate change on alpine plants in the northeastern United States.
