The North American Center for Saffron Research and Development at the University of Vermont (UVM) and Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania hosted the 7th annual workshop on saffron production and marketing. The workshop was held on March 23 and March 30, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event was held online and will be recorded for all registrants. During a February 6, 2023 Across the Fence program, Plant and Soil Science Professor Deb Neher and Environmental Science Student Rachel Elliot (’23) explained how undergraduate research not only advances science, but teaches valuable life lessons.
During December 2022, C-FARE (Council on Food, Agriculture and Resource Economics) board member and program chair, Jane Kolodinsky, hosted a national webinar about the current state of inflation in relation to food systems. The Horticulture Research and Education Center (HREC) recently presented a year-end review highlighting the significant research, teaching and outreach activities that took place at the farm in 2022. The 97-acre property located just a few miles from campus in South Burlington serves as the primary field laboratory site for agronomic and horticultural crop research for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and is the home of the Catamount Educational Farm, which provides a platform for research and education, serves as a model for sustainable fruit and vegetable production, and generates food for the local community.

Spring comes early to Vermont’s 100-acre wood on March 3, 4, and 5, for the 2023 Vermont Flower Show at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. The Friends of the Horticulture Farm (FHF) will be there, easing out of hibernation with blooming crabapples and forsythia, raffle prizes, and guest curator chats about growing grapes, lilacs and more.
