CALS and Extension faculty, staff and students are making headlines for their commentaries, research findings, as subject matter experts, and for outreach collaborations. Below is a collection of recent stories.

  • Farryl Bertmann offers expert commentary in this CNN article on the potential impacts of big food companies leaving Russia. The article was picked up by over 60 media outlets in the U.S.
  • Josh Farley offered commentary for an article in The Guardian about using digital currencies to support conservation funding.
  • Cheryl Sullivan was interviewed for a story on NPR, and another in the Barton Chronicle, about her research on fungi as a tool to curb winter ticks and help New England’s moose population. She is also featured in an article from the Burlington Free Press on what to know about the rise in ticks and tickborne illness.
  • WCAX interviewed Lauren Traister for a story on a partnership with UVM Extension’s 4H program and the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences during National Engineering Education Month.
  • The St. Albans Messenger published an interview with animal science student Megan Gervais about her experience at the CamAm International Sled Dog Race, an opportunity through her internship with Thesewoods Kennels.

  • Jay Hardesty is interviewed in a VPR story about ongoing negotiations between UVM administration and staff union.
  • The UVM Agroecology & Livelihoods Collaborative is mentioned as a leading group in agroecology transitions and education in a Civil Eats op-ed on the potential for agroecology to transform the food system.
  • The UVM Greenhouse is one of four growers working with the Resource Innovation Institute (RII) to benchmark its energy- and water-efficiency performance metrics as part of a USDA-funded project to encourage innovation and resource efficiency. Derek Allen is quoted in the RII press release.
  • UVM Extension Master GardenerJoyce Amsden shared tips and tricks for planting seedlings on WCAX.

  • The Proctor Maple Research Center hosted the annual Governor’s tree tapping in celebration of its 75th anniversary. The event received significant media coverage from nearly every local media outlet. See an event recap and complete coverage here.
  • Proctor Maple Research Center is mentioned in this article from Conde Nast Traveler on making the most of Vermont’s maple season.
  • Mark Isselhardt was a guest on a VPR Vermont Edition segment on Vermont’s sugaring season. He was also quoted in a VT Digger article on how climate change is impacting the maple sugaring industry.
