Students Quantify Recyclables and Food That Ends Up in the Trash

Students at the University of Vermont audit the contents of a trash can to quantify the amount of food waste and recyclables that are thrown in the regular trash.

During UVM’s Fall 2022 semester, Plant and Soil Science Professor Deb Neher taught PSS 154, Compost Ecology and Management. On September 12 and 14, Nehr’s students performed a waste audit at the Davis Center, an event organized by Corey Berman in the Office of Sustainability.

The purpose of the waste audit was to quantify the amount of food waste and recyclables that were placed into the trash destined for the landfill.

These contaminants were about 35 percent of the material placed in trash bins, which contributes to unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions.
