The annual student field day, headed by CALS Student Services, was held on August 25 at the Paul R. Miller Research and Educational Center (Miller Farm). Several buses brought students to and from the farm to enjoy a fun-filled event that welcomes new first-year and transfer students. ASCI Student Experiences Hands-on Veterinarian Work in South Africa

This summer, Sadie Gidner, 20, of Arlington, Virginia, spent two weeks in South Africa helping animals and learning hands-on what its like to be a veterinarian. Sadie is a UVM junior majoring in animal science.
Traveling with study-abroad organization Loop Abroad, Sadie was selected as part of a small team that volunteered at Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary studying big cats such as white and tawny lions, Siberian tigers, pumas, and leopards and caring for primates as well as volunteering at Care for Wild learning about the rescue, care for, and protection of rhinos. Dairy Science and Hemp Research Grant Recipients Announced
Animal and Veterinary Sciences Associate Professor John Barlow
John Barlow has received a USDA NIFA grant from the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The $246,766 grant is for Barlow’s sabbatical project beginning in August 2023, to July 2024.
The project is entitled, Tools and Approaches for Antimicrobial Stewardship and Resistance Surveillance on Small to Medium Sized Dairy Farms. The objective is to advance Barlow’s knowledge, skills, and experience in surveillance and quantification of antimicrobial resistant pathogens on dairy farms, using next-generation high-throughput metagenomic sequencing methods.
